Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • All authors signed statement that participated in the execution of the work, the study described is original and that it was submitted exclusively to evaluation by the ABCS Health Sciences. A scanned copy of this letter will be included as a supplementary document in step 4 of submission.
  • The manuscript file has all of the following sections in order: (1) title page, (2) abstract, (3) main text, (4) references. Figures, tables and charts, along with their respective legends are inserted after the end of the file, after the references.
  • The submitted manuscript file is in Microsoft Word or compatible. The text is double-spaced and uses Times New Roman 12-point font.
  • The text observes to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, on page About the Journal.
  • The original files of the figures will be provided as separate PDF, PNG, JPG, TIF or high-resolution GIF together with the additional documents in step 4 of submission.
  • For studies involving humans or experimental animals, a scanned copy of approval by a Research Ethics Committee is included as a supplementary document in step 4 of submission.
  • Authors are aware that the manuscript will be evaluated in peer review process, receiving anonymous opinions of independent external evaluators chosen by the editorial board.

Author Guidelines

TYPES OF CONTRIBUTIONS

• Original Articles: results of clinical, epidemiologic, experimental or theoretical studies; theoretical essays (criticisms and formulation of relevant theoretical knowledge); papers presenting methodological aspects and techniques used in Health Sciences.

• Review Articles: may either be "systematic review and meta-analysis" or "narrative review or critical review."

Systematic review and meta-analysis: by summarizing results of original, quantitative or qualitative studies previously published, these articles intend to answer to a specific question relevant to public health. They detail the search of original studies, selection criteria for studies included in the review and the summary of results obtained from the studies reviewed (which may be or not meta-analysis approaches).

Narrative review/critical review - A narrative or critical review has a descriptive-discursive content focusing on comprehensive presentation and discussion of scientific issues in public health. Should include a clear presentation of the scientific object of interest, logic argumentation, theoretical-methodological review of studies and a conclusion summary.  Should be produced by experts in the area of interest or renowned specialists.

• Reports: May be case reports or experience reports. Case reports should present and discuss cases of particular interest and contribution to the specific scientific literature. Experience reports should present and reflect about experiences in the teaching of health sciences.

• Letters to the Editor: comments on relevant aspects in the health sciences, stimulating discussion of specific current issues and controversies. They also include correspondence from readers commenting, discussing or criticizing manuscripts published on the journal. In this case, when possible, a response from the authors or publishers will be published along with the letter.

MANUSCRIPT FORMAT

All texts submitted for publication must be typed double-spaced, font Times New Roman 12, 3.0 cm margins and page size A4. All pages must be numbered in the upper right.

Submissions may be in English or Portuguese.

Each of the following sections must start a new page:

• Cover page: title (maximum 20 words); authors (full names); institutions to which the authors are affiliated; name, institutional address, telephone number and email address of the corresponding author.

• Abstract: should have up to 250 words and 6 keywords from the vocabulary Medical Subject Headings - MeSH (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/mesh).

• Resumo: Portuguese version of the abstract accompanied by matching keywords. Unnecessary for authors not fluent in Portuguese;

• Main text: divided according to the table below;

• Acknowledgements (directed at people or institutions that substantially contributed to the elaboration of the paper but do not meet the requirements to feature co-authoring, as well as the name of institutions that have provided financial or logistical support);

• References;

• Figures and tables.

The manuscript should respect the particularities of formatting of each type of contribution, according to the table below.

REFERENCE FORMATTING

References should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numbers, according to the order they are mentioned in the text with the corresponding superscript numeral. Authors should provide the references following the rules of Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals (available in www.icmje.org).

All references should include DOI in Internet address (http://dx.doi.org/...), whenever available.

FIGURES, TABLES AND CHARTS

Figures and tables should be submitted separately or at the end of the text, along with their legends and/or titles.

All images should be designated as "Figures" and numbered in Arabic numerals according to the order they appear in the text. Images should be provided in its original format (jpg, tif, gif, png) and high resolution (minimum 300 dpi).

All figures will be published in black and white, except in the case the authors take the responsibility for the additional costs of color printing.

Images presenting patients must be submitted with the terms of acceptance of publication signed.

Tables and charts should be numbered in roman numerals according to the order they appear in the text.

 

Authors may be asked to rectify formatting issues in text before the manuscript is sent for analysis by reviewers.
